Studies On Combining Ability In Oat

Abstract
Analysis of variance observed highly significant differences among the parents and F1s for all the characters. The parents vs hybrids showed highly significant differences for all the traits. The F test indicated that the variance due to treatments were highly significant for all the attributes, indicated the presence of substantial genetic variability in the present set of material. The variance components for σ2s values were found higher than estimates values σ2g for all the characters, indicating major role of additive gene action in expression of these traits. The ratio between estimated variance owing to σ2g/σ2s was found less than unity for all the traits. The mean degree of dominance (σ2g/σ2s)½ was found greater than unity for all the characters, in the present investigation, indicated that over dominance. On the basis of both general combining ability effects and per se performance parents JHO851 was found good general combiner for maximum eight character including green yield per plant, OL125 for eight character and NDO612 for eight characters, may be used in the hybridization programme aimed at development of superior genotypes. Out of 28 F1’s hybrids twelve best cross combinations, viz., Kent x OS6, Kent x JHO- 99-2, Kent x JHO851, OS6 x UPO212, JHO-99-2 x JHO851, JHO-99-2 x OS403, JHO 851 x OS403, JHO851 x OL125, JHO851 x NDO612, OS403 x OL125, OL125 x NDO612 and UPO212 x NDO612 exhibited significant and positive specific combining ability effects along with good per se performance for green fodder yield per plant and also showed significant positive specific combining ability effects for some other important yield components characters. These cross combinations may be exploited in suitable breeding device for the some attributes.
