Abstract

Child abuse is a state of emotional, physical, economic and sexual maltreatment meted out to a person below the age of eighteen and is a globally prevalent phenomenon. Child abuse has serious physical and psycho-social consequences which adversely affect the health and overall well-being of a child. The present research was an attempt to find out the prevalence of child abuse, to identify the type of child abuse, gender disparities across three socio economic groups in Allahabad district. A total sample of 180 children in the age group of 9-18 years from three socio economic status families using stratified random sampling technique comprising 60 respondent from each socio economic group (30 boys and 30 girls respectively) were selected for the study. Socio economic status scale devised by Kuppuswami (1962) was used to assess the socio economic status of the respondents and a self made interview schedule for children was used to assess the prevalence of different types of abuse. Results indicated that physical abuse, neglect and emotional abuse were more prevalent in lower socio economic group among girls followed by middle and upper socio economic group. Children reported a higher incidence of sexual abuse. Socio economic status and type of child abuse had a significant effect (P less than . 01) and gender had a non significant effect on the prevalence of child abuse. Hence the study revealed the various types of abuse prevalent among children and it was suggested that awareness campaigns, role of mass media, law and policies for protection of children’s rights can prove to be helpful in combating child abuse.
