Abstract

Deficiency of soil P and phosphorus deficiency intolerant cultivars severely affects rice yield. To evaluate the phosphorus use efficiency (PUE) of different genotypes we used field and hydroponic screening methods. Screening of 120 genotypes was done in low P field which revealed the elite performance of the genotypes Kasalath and the NILs IR 74-Pup1-A, IR 74-Pup1-C, IR 74-Pup1-D, IR 74-Pup1-E, IR 64-Pup1-F and IR 64-Pup1- M. From that, rice genotypes varying in PUE and yield components were selected and tested under hydroponic and field conditions. Based on these screenings, the genotypes were differentiated as high efficient and low efficient for phosphorus use efficiency. The results suggested that field studies agreed with that of hydroponic screening. Also it revealed that phosphorus use efficiency was highly influenced by genotypic differences and different levels of supply of P. The results also show that NILs can better be used as donor parents in crop improvement programmes to avoid the chance of introgression of some negative traits in case, if traditional landraces were used.
